When you attend your first meeting at SAA Exeter, you will quickly realise you are not alone, you will be welcome without shame or judgement. You will find a safe space, a place to be honest with others about how you have acted out in the past without the fear of rejection.

You will hear about the Twelve Steps and how we have found it to be a clear and simple program which takes us on a path to freedom from our compulsive sexual behaviours.

You may hear about the tools of recovery that fellows rely on, such as programme calls, the three circles, recovery literature and service positions within the group.

All meetings close with the serenity prayer which takes on its own universal application to our lives in recovery as we learn to ‘let go and let God’ when we start to trust our higher power.

Our meetings focus on different topics but each will focus on the experience, strength and hope that is ours when we work the steps and apply the program of recovery to our lives.

Suggestions to Newcomers

  • Read the Newcomer Packet as soon as possible.
  • Make your recovery your top life priority.
  • Make a commitment to attend at least 6 meetings.
  • Find a sponsor or temporary sponsor as soon as possible (A sponsor is someone who guides you through the 12 Steps).
  • Begin to work on The Steps.
  • Get in the habit of calling your points of contact every day. Calling other members of the fellowship will benefit you as well as them. Calls are supportive of your recovery and are welcomed by other members of the group.
  • Put the same amount of effort into your recovery as you did acting out.
  • Your addiction never takes a day off. Your recovery shouldn’t, either.
